Welcome to our sanctuary!

The Glady Mae Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that was incorporated on December 4, 2014. Our mission is to provide a safe and permanent home for those cats and dogs at risk of unnecessary euthanasia. We purchased a 10-acre property just south of Mason City off Highway 65 and the Burchinal Blacktop. The Sanctuary planning was approved by Cerro Gordo County in June 2017 and licensed by the Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship (IDALS) on October 25, 2018. We have been taking in cats, that are housed in the back of the main dwelling, since that time. We have four barns that need to be renovated for cat and dog quarters; a Clear Lake builder and his crew are currently in the process of renovating one of them as our first dog building.

We also can provide a safe and temporary home for the pets (cats and dogs) of domestic abuse victims who often will not leave their abusers fearing for the pet(s) safety because they most often times cannot take them with them to the safe house. By The Sanctuary temporarily caring for their pets, this allows the person to temporarily relocate to a safe place. When the person is ready to leave the safe house and resume community living, she or he and their pet(s) will be reunited.  We also offer this service for hospitalized people and those being deployed.

Incoming animals will be quarantined and vetted before joining the general populations. All animals are neutered/spayed and microchipped.  The Glady Mae Animal Sanctuary provides the utmost love and care for all of its animals by meeting their physiological, social, psychological, environmental, and behavioral needs. They are always free from fear and distress. We are currently an all volunteer organization and rely on donations. Your donations will directly go to the animals for food, shelter, and medical needs as well as anything else they may require. Your donations are 100% tax deductible. If you would like to donate, you can do so on this site by using the PayPal link. Thank you so much in advance for your generosity and helping us to achieve our goals.

How We Serve

The Glady Mae Animal Sanctuary will provide a safe and permanent home for those companion animals at risk of unnecessary euthanasia. Some of these cats and dogs will be “drop offs,” but most will come from shelters as we will be networking with the various Iowa shelters to obtain these animals before they become high risk for unnecessary euthanasia. After being quarantined for a short while, to check for medical and psychological issues, dogs will be members of a particular pack as this is their true nature. All cats and dogs will be spayed/neutered and microchipped.

The Glady Mae Animal Sanctuary will provide the utmost love and care for all its companion animals for the best quality of life by meeting their physiological, social, psychological, environmental, and behavioral needs. Our animals will never be hungry, thirsty, in pain, or any other discomfort. They will always be free from fear and distress.

The Glady Mae Animal Sanctuary will provide training for our dogs. Behavioral issues are one of the biggest reasons dogs get relinquished to shelters and subsequently are unnecessarily euthanized. For the majority of dogs, behavioral issues can be successfully treated. Treatment plans will be tailored to the individual dog. We already have well versed trainers on board for this fun and rewarding task.

The Glady Mae Animal Sanctuary will provide rehabilitation procedures with our dogs. Sometimes training a dog takes longer than another dog and depending on individual circumstances, dogs may have to be temporarily quarantined. If this is the case, they will not be completely isolated. They might not be part of a pack right away, but they can certainly be joined with other dogs for short periods of strict monitoring.

Just as we care for our animals in life, we will care for them in death. We will love them forever and grieve their passings taking comfort from the so elegantly written The Rainbow Bridge.

The Rainbow Bridge
inspired by a Norse legend
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.
